During the Great Fire of London, which destroyed much of the city, only a surprisingly small number of people were officially recorded as dead—fewer than 10.
This seems unbelievable given that the fire burned for four days and destroyed over 13,000 homes. Historians believe the real death toll was likely much higher, but many victims—especially the poor—weren’t recorded, and the intense heat may have completely cremated bodies, leaving no trace.
It’s a powerful reminder that historical records don’t always tell the full story.
