The Summer of the Hidden River

The summer heat wrapped the small village like a warm blanket when siblings Arif and Lila arrived at their grandmother’s house. School was out, responsibilities were gone, and the days stretched endlessly ahead—full of possibility.

Arif, the older brother, loved exploring. Lila, younger but far braver, loved mysteries. Together, they made a perfect team.

On their second day, while wandering beyond the mango orchards, Lila noticed something strange.

“Did you hear that?” she whispered.

Arif paused. Beneath the buzzing of cicadas and rustling leaves, there was a faint, steady sound—like water flowing.

“But there’s no river here,” Arif said, frowning.

“That’s what makes it interesting,” Lila replied with a grin.

They pushed through tall grass and thick bushes, following the sound deeper into the woods than they had ever gone before. The air grew cooler, quieter. Finally, they stumbled upon something incredible—a narrow, crystal-clear river hidden between moss-covered stones, sparkling under beams of sunlight.

“It’s like a secret,” Lila breathed.

They named it The Hidden River.

Every day after that, the siblings returned. They built a small raft from fallen branches, raced leaves downstream, and told each other stories about pirates and lost kingdoms. One afternoon, while exploring further along the riverbank, Arif slipped on a wet rock and nearly fell into the deeper current.

Lila grabbed his hand just in time.

For a moment, they both stood still—hearts racing.

“You okay?” she asked, trying to sound calm.

Arif nodded, catching his breath. “Yeah… thanks to you.”

That evening, sitting by the river as the sky turned golden, Arif looked at his sister.

“You know,” he said, “this place is amazing… but it wouldn’t mean anything if I was here alone.”

Lila smiled. “Adventures are always better together.”

As summer slowly faded, the days grew shorter, and it was time to leave. On their last visit, they carved a small symbol—a sun and two tiny figures—into a tree beside the river.

A promise.

That no matter how much time passed, they would return.

And somewhere, hidden deep in the woods, the river kept flowing—waiting for the siblings who had discovered its secret.
